There is no single best one, because these tools do different jobs. Hudl is the strongest film platform and the only one selling capture hardware. SportsVisio is the strongest automated video analysis for a team with no analyst. FastModel, now owned by Hudl, is the play diagramming standard at the top level. HoopBrief studies NBA matchups rather than your team. NextPlay is the one place that holds the whole team: roster, calendar, practices, notes and tracking, together.
Two things worth knowing before you compare anything. The category is more consolidated than it looks: Hudl owns FastModel and Instat, and Synergy is now part of Sportradar. And most of these vendors do not publish a price, including Hudl for every one of its add-ons.
I wrote this because I needed it. I coach a senior team and a U18 team, and every year I sit down and try to work out what to pay for. Every ranking I found was written by one of the vendors and put itself first. So this one names who owns what, quotes only prices I could read on the vendor's own page, and says plainly where the tool I built loses.

Every figure above was read on the vendor's own pricing page on 31 August 2026 and is quoted as written. Where a row says not published, it means the vendor shows no price at all, not that the price is high. Currencies are as the vendor lists them. Prices change, and this table will be wrong eventually; the verified date is there so you know how stale it is.
Ranked by job, because that is how you actually choose
Getting film shot, stored and shared
Winner: Hudl. It is the biggest library, the most coaches already on it, and the only vendor here selling you a camera. If your league already runs on Hudl exchange, that decision is mostly made for you.
Turning film into statistics without an analyst
Winner: SportsVisio. It does automated AI video analysis, and it publishes what that costs. NextPlay cannot do this today. If this is the job you need done, we are not the answer and I would rather say so here than have you find out after paying.
Drawing plays at the highest level
Winner: FastModel, now a Hudl product. FastDraw is the diagramming standard in professional and college programs, and it is priced for them, which is to say not publicly. Our Play Creator is in every NextPlay plan including the $19 one. It is good and it is not FastDraw. It is aiming there.
Studying NBA matchups and tendencies
Winner: HoopBrief, and it is barely the same category. It is built on NBA play by play data, so it knows Jokic and it knows nothing about your point guard. Useful for a coach who studies the league. Useless for running Tuesday practice.
Holding the whole team in one place
Winner: NextPlay, and this is the job the rest of the category does not do. Everything above is one tool for one task, so the roster lives in a spreadsheet, the calendar lives in your phone, the practice plan lives in a notebook and the film lives somewhere else again. Scouting the next opponent on a small budget
Split between NextPlay and CourtSensei, and it depends where you coach. Synergy has the deepest opponent library by a distance, and it is priced for programs with a budget line for it. Both of us are aimed at the coach who does not have one.
Where we lose, plainly
A page that ranks its own author first on every line is an advertisement, and everyone can tell. So here is the honest list.
SportsVisio beats us on automated video analysis. They generate statistics from your film with AI. We do not do that today. Our Video Hub is fast manual work: clip, telestrate, build playlists, share to phones. Automated tagging is in development and I am not going to describe it as shipped.
FastModel beats us on play diagramming. It is the tool that top programs use, and it earns that. Ours is built into every plan rather than sold as a separate professional product, which is a different trade, not a better one.
Hudl beats us on scale and on hardware. Automated camera capture, the exchange your league may already use, the roster of programs already on it. If you need capture hardware, nothing on this page competes with Hudl and it earns its price.
Synergy beats everyone on library depth. If you coach somewhere that can afford it, that scouting library is a real advantage and nothing here replaces it.
So which one should you buy
Ask what breaks your week, and buy for that.
If it is film, and your league is on Hudl, use Hudl. If it is statistics you do not have time to chart, SportsVisio does that job and publishes the price. If it is diagrams for a professional staff, FastModel.
